The PHA, in conjunction with HSC Clinical Education Centre, is hosting a webinar to promote awareness among healthcare professionals of the pertussis (whooping cough) vaccination programme for pregnant women. Uptake of pertussis vaccination has fallen over recent years.
Date: Wednesday 9th October 2024
Time: 6.30 – 8.00pm
Platform: Via Zoom
Pertussis is a highly contagious, vaccine-preventable, respiratory disease that is caused by the Bordetella pertussis bacterium. It can affect people of all ages, and can cause serious and life-threatening complications. Young unimmunised infants are the most vulnerable group with the highest rates of complication and death. Receiving the vaccination in pregnancy, from 28 weeks, is the best way to protect infants from birth until they can receive their first primary vaccines at two months of age.
The aims of this session are:
- to support staff involved in discussing vaccination against pertussis with pregnant women by providing evidence based information
- to raise awareness of current pertussis epidemiology and the impact of pertussis on young infants
- to promote uptake of vaccination against pertussis through increasing awareness among healthcare practitioners
