The United Nations General Assembly declared a day for Internal Tolerance for FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) in 2012 – 6th February. Globally, on the 6th February worldwide campaigns will continue to raise awareness of what FGM is with an aim to work together for its elimination.
The World Health Organisation 2025 remind us that
- An estimated 230 million girls and women alive today have undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia where FGM is practiced.
- FGM is mostly carried out on young girls between infancy and age 15.
We are also reminded continually that FGM is a violation of the human rights of women and girls.
The HSC Clinical Education Centre deliver an education programme in relation to FGM – the next session runs on 17th February. Please go the programmes page to book a place.
