The importance of a confident, competent workforce to ensure safe, sensitive and effective practice when caring for dying and bereaved people is highlighted in the HSC Bereavement Standards. (HSC Strategy for Bereavement Care (2009) Standard 4: Knowledge and Skills).
This programme will aim to provide staff with the opportunity to develop and maintain their knowledge and skills for the provision of bereavement care. The programme will provide an introduction to bereavement, grief and loss. We will consider how it may be experienced by individuals and factors that may impact on that experience. It will offer participants the opportunity to reflect on helpful communications skills and the support that should be available to people who are bereaved. The importance of self-care and care of colleagues will also be addressed.
“Health care staff caring for patients and their families before, at the time of and after death, can influence how a bereaved family copes following death”. We have one chance to get it right.
The programme is suitable for all health and social care staff.
