Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a severe violation of human rights, causing significant and lasting physical, psychological and sexual health consequences for girls and women throughout their lives. Globally, more than 230 million girls and women have already been affected, and without accelerated action, an additional 22.7 million girls are at risk by 2030. Each year, approximately 4 million girls undergo FGM, with over half affected before the age of five. Despite progress in recent years, the global rate of decline must increase dramatically to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal target.
To support healthcare staff in recognising, responding to, and safeguarding those affected by or at risk of FGM, our organisation offers a dedicated FGM Programme. This training provides healthcare professionals with the knowledge and confidence to recognise, respond to and work to prevent FGM within Northern Ireland.
Staff can book onto the Programme via https://cec.hscni.net/programmes/
