On International Day of the Midwife, we proudly recognise and thank midwives across Northern Ireland for their commitment, expertise and compassion. Midwives play a vital role in delivering high‑quality sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health services, supporting women and gender diverse people before, during and after birth, and throughout the life course. Their work is central to safe, respectful and person‑centred maternity care within our Health and Social Care system.
This year’s International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) campaign, “One Million More Midwives”, highlights the urgent global need for sustained investment in midwifery education, employment, regulation and leadership. The evidence highlights when midwives are educated to international standards and supported to work to their full scope of practice, outcomes for women, babies and families improve, health systems are strengthened, and care becomes more accessible and cost‑effective. More information on the campaign can be accessed here: https://internationalmidwives.org/theme-idm-2026-one-million-more-midwives/
In Northern Ireland, continued investment in education is essential to supporting and sustaining the midwifery workforce. The Clinical Education Centre offers a range of education programmes and webinars to support midwives in developing skills, leadership and confidence in practice. Midwives are encouraged to explore available courses and upcoming webinars at https://cec.hscni.net/programmes/ . Today, we celebrate the invaluable contribution of midwives across Northern Ireland and reaffirm our commitment to supporting midwives now and into the future.
