Suicide Prevention and Self-Harm Awareness in NI

“Hope stops people from acting on suicidal thoughts and keeps people alive when everything seems dark” Dr Siobhan O’Neil Interim Mental Health Champion.

According to Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency it is predicted that suicide rate in Northern Ireland for 2019/2020 will be between 200 and 220.  In response to these worrying trends CEC have developed a new programme Suicide Prevention and Self Harm Awareness In Northern Ireland.   This programme encourages participants to consider the Northern Ireland context and strategic drivers for service delivery in self harm and suicide prevention.   The programme also  signposts participants to key documents such as Protect Life 2 Strategy and the Service Framework for Mental Health and Wellbeing  2018-2021.  It highlights the fabulous work carried out by the Towards Zero Suicide Initiate and gives attention to the highly anticipated Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Training Framework and teaches skills on self harm and suicide prevention.  It is hoped that in the future suicide rates will be reduced by as much as 10%, which will be in line with World Health Organisation Guidance.
