Minor Suturing for NIAS



To develop knowledge and skills relating to the suturing of minor wounds

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain skin structure and function
  • Describe the different stages of wound healing and the factors that delay wound healing
  • Describe how to define wounds
  • Define the purpose of sutures
  • Consider alternatives to sutures
  • Describe how to assess a patient and wound before considering the use of sutures
  • Discuss the approprite use of a range of suturing materials and eqipment
  • Outline the characteristics of wounds which should not be sutured
  • Explore common suturing errors and consider removal of sutures
  • Discuss pertinent aspects of accountability and responsibility in relation to suturing and expanding your scope of practice
  • Summarise wound care information and advice give to patients before discharge
  • Practice the skill of suturing minor wounds using a simple interrupted suture

Following this theoretical component the participant must engage with an appropriate skilled practitioner, in his /her clinical area, to further develop a greater knowledge and understanding of this person-centred care activity.  This will involve a period of supervised practice in Minor Suturing which should be completed within 12 weeks to consolidate learning and application to practice

It is the responsibility of the individual participant to complete this activity and to confirm completion with his / her line manager
