Intravenous Therapies - Administration Of



To enable the practitioner to develop further their cognitive, effective and psychomotor skills so that they may competently and expertly undertake the administration of intravenous therapies to a patient.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the legal and professional implications of the administration of intravenous therapies
  • Discuss the importance of haemostasis in relation to fluid and electrolyte balance and recognise common imbalances
  • Recognise and manage anaphylaxis
  • Apply appropriate drug calculation formulas to promote safe administration IV medication and infusion rates
  • Work towards achieving 100% in a calculation paper.
  • Identify the pharmaceutical principles implicit in intravenous therapies administration and their implications for nursing practice.
  • Discuss the principles of infection control as applied to intravenous therapies.
  • Discuss the reasons why drug errors occur and how these can be prevented or minimised
  • Describe the practical aspects of intravenous drug administration and be able to discuss complications and their management.


Registered Nurses & Registered Midwives who are 6 months post registration.


Lecture / Discussion / Written mathematical calculations.
