Purpose

To give practitioners an understanding of how capacity informs the patient’s ability to make decisions in their care.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the key concepts of capacity, consent and best interests as they relate to people in Acute Care Setting
  • Promote the well-being of those who lack capacity within a positive rights-based perspective
  • Explore the concept of safeguarding, deprivation of liberty and human rights for patients who lack capacity
  • Outline best practice approaches to decision making in the lives of those patients who lack capacity
