Deprivation of Liberty: Implications for Practice (Half Day Awareness Session)



To increase participant awareness and knowledge of mental capacity assessment, consent and deprivation of liberty in light of human rights legislation and other interim local guidance

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the study session, participants will be able to:

  • Explore and discuss the deprivation of liberty continuum
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of mental capacity assessment and consent
  • Identify examples of deprivation of liberty within the care environment and explore less restrictive interventions within the context of human rights legislation
  • Apply appropriate interventions that conform with the relevant legal principles in light of human rights legislation and interim local guidance for Northern Ireland/United Kingdom


Any Healthcare Professional desiring or requiring an increased awareness of mental capacity assessment, consent and deprivation of liberty and their implications for clinical practice: NB. this half day awareness session does not include conducting a mental capacity assessment; this will be provided in the one day programme.
