To give practitioners an understanding of how capacity informs the client's ability to make decisions in their care.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the key concepts of capacity, consent and best interests as they relate to people with learning disability
  • Promote the well-being of those who lack capacity within a positive rights-based perspective
  • Explore the concept of safeguarding, deprivation of liberty and human rights for clients who lack capacity
  • Outline best practice approaches to decision making in the lives of those clients who lack capacity
