Purpose

To increase knowledge and understanding of principles involved in passing a nasogastric tube and ongoing nursing care in relation to administration of feeds and medication.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract
  • Outline the indications for nasogastric tube insertion
  • Discuss and demonstrate best practice in relation to insertion of nasogastric tube and methods of confirming correct tube placement
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of administration of enteral feed and medications
