Pre-Operative Assessment - An Introduction (4 Day Course)



The aim of the course is to enable participants to develop knowledge and skills in pre-operative assessment.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Discuss current guidelines relating to the role of the nurse in pre-operative assessment.

  • Examine the relevant professional, legal and ethical issues.

  • Discuss and interpret a range of pre-operative observations and/or investigations within accepted protocols.

  • Collate patient information through effective history taking, recorded observations and available results.

  • Identify health promotion opportunities within pre-operative assessment and take appropriate action.

  • Discuss pharmacology in pre-operative assessment.

  • Demonstrate timely and appropriate information given to patients and the multidisciplinary team through effective communication.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

  • Develop an understanding of the anaesthetic risk assessment.

  • Have an opportunity to practice neck and airway assessments.


Nurses on all parts of the Professional Register.


Teacher facilitated, lectures supported by group discussion.
