Diabetes - Level 2 Competency Based Training for Dietitians (previously known as Level A)



To deliver on the Level 2 DMEG competencies 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 12, 15 by consolidating practice in the nutritional management of Diabetes

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the aims and methods of dietary treatment of Diabetes, and list the Diabetes UK Nutrition Guidelines
  • Identify oral hypoglycaemic agents, insulin and other therapies for the treatment of Diabetes with respect to NI prescribing practices
  • Recognise the role of carbohydrate and be able to advise appropriately about carbohydrate, GI and GL
  • Explain the management of physical activity
  • Translate theory into practice in variety of clinical scenarios
  • Reflect on current practice and identify strategies for increasing knowledge and skills
  • To reflect on how the DMEG competencies impact on the NI access diabetes criteria and implementation of the care pathways for community and hospital inpatients across the region



  • Any Band 5 or 6 dietitian for whom diabetes is not their speciality
  • The course is suitable for any Dietitians who wish to increase their Diabetes knowledge with a view to practising at specialist level
